Concert in aid of Farnham Parish Church Restoration Fund
The percussionist on this occasion (to the left of the first image below) was the 15-year old Jeffrey Tate, a pupil at Farnham Boys' Grammar School, who went on to have a highly distinguished musical career. Among other things he was principal conductor of the English Chamber Orchestra and was the first person to be appointed principal conductor of the Royal Opera House. In 1990 he was made a CBE, and in 2017 he was knighted for his services to music.
Unfortunately, the numerous biographies of Sir Jeffrey somehow fail to record his early career as a budding percussionist with the Waverley Singers!
Sir Jeffrey's sister, Jill Denbigh, is a long-standing member of the Alto section of the choir.
Note also the extremely serious faces of the members of the Livia Gollancz Wind Quintet in the main image! We note they didn't return for any subsequent concerts... Let's hope they enjoyed themselves on stage, anyway!
